Heads of School Retreat

New in 2015! MSM Heads of School Retreat, November 2-3, 2015

Leading a school is one of the most rewarding and the most challenging vocations in academia. It can also be one of the loneliest. A head of school engages every day with many constituents – students, parents, board members, donors, faculty, staff, and community members – but it is difficult to find a colleague or two who understands the role, who can truly offer a listening ear, and who can offer a helpful, unbiased response. Finding a peer group that can offer support and suggestions in a safe environment is essential to thriving in the role.

Based on feedback from our member survey last year, and our desire to help meet the needs of member schools, MSM will be hosting a two-day retreat for heads of school. Your financial investment is small considering the large number of opportunities that could be gained.

Would you like to spend a couple of days talking with peers about admissions, marketing, budgeting, legal issues, or board relations? Would you look forward to trying out a few ideas with people that understand your job? Would you welcome the chance to learn from others who are engaged in the same efforts? This is your chance!

Making the Leap from an Admission Mindset to Enrollment Management with Christine Hailer Baker, Founder and President of The Baker Group

The game has changed for private schools given increased market challenges including: skyrocketing tuitions, shifting demographics, increased needs and expectations of families, and more available education options to families. Now more than ever, what needs to be at the core of institutional thinking and planning is a collaborative and systematized approach to admissions, market research, enrollment planning, retention and internal marketing, which are all essential enrollment management components. This session will offer an overview of how Heads of Montessorri Schools can lead their school in the leap from l a traditional admission function to embracing a more strategic admission approach that will lead to a healthy and sustainable enrollment management model.

When one thinks about best practices in independent school admission and enrollment management, it is Christine Baker and the Baker Group who come to mind. Leading the profession with the annual Chatham Experience and the Crow's Nest Institute, Chris is best known for her independent school leadership in admission, enrollment management, and marketing strategy development. Chris is highly regarded nationwide for the Baker Group's work in successfully translating enrollment management practices into practical short and long term strategies for its more than 600 independent school clients. Since founding the Baker Group in 1999, Chris has led schools through the country's most economically challenging times, supporting their need to become more data-driven and research-based and to help them develop school-specific marketing strategies that reflect coordinated school-wide efforts based on this research.

Mindfulness for the Head of School with Gary Morse

Mindfulness is a nonjudgmental openness to and acceptance of the present moment as it is, not as we think it should be or want it to be. Using mindful observation one becomes aware of personal patterns of thought and intention that can sabotage our personal health as well as our professional performance. In this mindfulness - based stress management workshop you will learn practical and accessible skills to help tame the anxious mind and help you clarify what matters most in your life.

Gary is a former psychotherapist and has been a professor of psychology for the last 30 years. He has been a meditator and mindfulness practitioner for over 40 years, has extensive experience teaching meditation, and has formal training as an instructor of the Jon Kabat-Zinn's Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction program. He is currently specifying his intention in mindfulness within education.

Leadership Challenges

Join other heads of schools to discuss case studies: Real Case Studies. In this session, members of the MSM Board have prepared case studies around real situations that they have faced during their headships. Hear how some of these situations unfolded, then discuss what might have been handled differently along the way and how the situation might be handled, moving forward. Unlike other case study sessions, participants will be able to discuss the real outcome with the real author of the case study. A great exercise in critical thinking.
